The Chemin du Montparnasse
Espace Frans Krajcberg, Contemporary Art Center for Art and Nature is located at the end of Chemin du Montparnasse, a bucolic alley at 21 avenue du Maine in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.
A vestige of the great history of Montparnasse, the alley has seen pass by the greatest names of the artistic scene of the period. In 1908, the painter and artist Marie Vassilieff opened the Russian Academy, attended by Erik Satie, Henri Matisse, Amadeo Modigliani, or Ossip Zadkine and Chaïm Soutine.
During the First World War, to help her artist friends in times of conflict, Marie Vassilieff opened a cantine where Picasso, Braque, Léger, Matisse, Foujita and many others would come to eat for a few pennies.
When the Academy closed, Chemin du Montparnasse continued to welcome many artists, students of Fine Arts, theatrical avant-garde, publishers, photographers, filmmakers, galleries.. And later on the Montparnasse Museum which has been since 2016, The Villa Vassilieff.
The Chemin housed above all the Parisian studio of Frans Krajcberg. From the beginning of the 1960s until his death in November 2017, he came to work and recharge his batteries several times a year.
