Frans Krajcberg
A PIONEERING ARTIST OF THE 20TH CENTURY
Frans Krajcberg (1921-2017) is one of the greatest Brazilian artists of the 20th century. Sculptor, painter, photographer, and passionate environmental activist, he left us on November 15, 2017, at the age of 96.
Born in Poland in 1921 into a Jewish family, he lost everything during the war and emigrated to Brazil where, captivated by the natural richness of its fauna and flora, he settled to create relentlessly until his death.
His ties to Paris remained profoundly strong. It was there that he found refuge among the artists of Montparnasse. It was from there, encouraged by Marc Chagall and Fernand Léger, that he set out. It is also there that he returned time and again, to reconnect with friends and rejuvenate, tirelessly building a bridge between Rio and Paris.
Throughout his life, Frans Krajcberg devoted his art to nature in order to “ignite a movement that mobilizes the expression of a planetary consciousness.”
Calling for “a new ethic of artistic creation,” he reminded us that the artist, now more than ever, “must be at the heart of every civilizational project: fully and radically.”

A PASSIONATE ADVOCATE FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSE
Frans Krajcberg is a vital witness of the 20th century and a committed actor in the great struggle of the 21st century: preserving the planet.
His works are both a cry of alarm and a message of hope, denouncing the plundering of natural resources by mankind.
His sculptures and assemblages are crafted from wood “rescued” from Amazon forest fires, intertwined clusters of vines, polychrome trunks, or quartz minerals... His canvases are impressions captured directly from the surrounding nature (sand, rocks...), enhanced with natural pigments sourced from the mines of Minas Gerais.
Frans Krajcberg plays with the shadows and light cast upon his sculptures, which he enjoys reworking in harmony with the changing seasons. His oeuvre seems to pursue an endless quest: to bring back to life what has died.

In 1975, the exhibition held at the CNAC premises, the future Centre Georges Pompidou, reinforced his determination to reveal the forgotten nature. He denounced the threat posed by urban expansion and the third technological revolution. “It was there that I realized that Art for Art’s sake was over, and I want my sculptures to bear witness to this disaster.”
In 1978, Pierre Restany authored the Rio Negro Manifesto after a journey to the Amazon with Frans Krajcberg. In it, he thoroughly analyzed Krajcberg’s work, delivering a heartfelt plea for art committed to the planet.
Between 1985 and 1990, Frans Krajcberg witnessed the devastating fires ravaging the Brazilian forest. He condemned them through photographic reports, for which he received death threats. His friend and activist Chico Mendes was assassinated in 1988.
The 1990s brought him widespread recognition, firmly associating the artist with his activism: Krajcberg held numerous exhibitions (in Rio, Moscow, Paris...).
In 2005, during the Year of Brazil in France, a major retrospective exhibition was organized at Bagatelle (in the Bois de Boulogne, Paris). It was an opportunity for Frans Krajcberg to launch his “Cry for the Planet.”
In 2015, Frans Krajcberg participated in COP 21, hosting Indigenous leaders. The Frans Krajcberg Space became a laboratory of ideas and exchange, an “Amazon outpost in Paris.”
In 2016, Frans Krajcberg was the guest artist of honor at the São Paulo Biennial.
In 2017, he was the first artist invited to the Musée de l’Homme in Paris as a whistleblower to address the question “Where are we going?” in the renovated permanent exhibition.
